The “textile” trail – SVP International school of Textiles & Management

On Monday, 20th June, we made a trip to Coimbatore from Munnar. We left Munnar by 5.30 am as we wanted to reach our destination by 11.30 am. We had an appointment with Dr Rameshkumar, Director, S V Patel International School of Textiles and Management, Coimbatore, an institute dedicated to offering programs and courses within the Textiles domain.

We were introduced to Mr Rameshkumar by Mr Venkatesh Narasimhan, MD of Co-optex.

We reached the campus by about 11 am.

Mr Rameshkumar, and his colleague, Mr Pandiaraja welcomed us at the entrance to the admin block and took us on a campus tour, taking us through their classrooms, library, auditorium, hostel, computer lab and other facilities. The institute has just launched a B.Sc in Textiles Management course and MBA in Textile Management with emphasis on retail, apparel and business management. Until recently they had offered only PG Diploma programs but owing to demands from students and market place forces have launched a graduate and an MBA program this year. Mr Rameshkumar and his team were confident of a good student intake for their programs. We even met a researcher who is working on developing an import substitute material from traditional sources, capable of making a difference in the market place. Dr Rameshkumar spoke about the extensive linkages that the institute has developed over years with academia and industry to build credibility and opportunities for their students.

We then sat down in their conference room to discuss in detail about ShikshaDaan and how we could collaborate with the Institute for mutual benefit. We spoke about our partners Udhavum Ullangal, Sevalaya, English Helper, and also about ways in which we can add value to the Institute through facilitation and collaboration using our extensive network.

Mr Rameshkumar and his team shared with us cases of two specific students, Kalanandhini and Rohit Kumar, who are exceptionally talented but lack financial access. We have assured Mr Ramesh Kumar that ShikshaDaan would do everything possible to support the two students to complete their programs.

The initiative to meet with Dr Rameshkumar and his team is part of ShikshaDaan’s strategy to reach out to students belonging to the weaving community and help them to realise their potential. Its a small support to the efforts to keep the weaving community viable and stay in the business, largely the handloom weavers as its an art form that is dying.

The SVP International school of textiles and Management has students from all over India, even from the weavers city of Varanasi. There is hostel facility available for both boys and girls. The placement record is commendable as it is nearly 100%, so almost all students who study here get placed in good jobs through campus placement. So if textiles is your area of interest, do study at the SVP International school of textiles and Managment.
